Accessibility

Film Festival Oostende (FFO) is committed to an inclusive film experience and provides additional support for people with visual or auditory impairments. With Earcatch and Subcatch, we make films more accessible than ever.

Earcatch

Earcatch logo

Audiodescription allows blind and visually impaired people to fully enjoy a movie or TV show. During audiodescription, a narrator describes all important visual elements on screen. The narrator's voice fills in between dialogues and sounds (e.g., a gunshot) to explain what is happening visually. Images are converted into words so that blind and visually impaired viewers can autonomously follow the story. Through the Earcatch app, blind and visually impaired users can listen to Dutch-language audiodescription during the film. Using headphones, they can hear a narrator’s voice explaining what’s on screen, in between the dialogues.

Subcatch

SUBCATCH LOGO

For deaf and hard-of-hearing film lovers, FFO introduces Subcatch. This system provides subtitles with additional information, such as sound effects and music, via a free app, available directly on your smartphone or tablet. For a comfortable experience, you can use a stand to keep your smartphone or tablet stable.

How it works

  1. Download the free apps Earcatch (for audiodescription) from the App Store or Google Play or Subcatch (for customized subtitles) from App Store or Google Play.
  2. Select the desired film within the app.
  3. Synchronize your device with the film during the screening and enjoy an accessible film experience.
