COOP!-competition 2024

In the COOP!-competition, the focus is on collaborations or 'COOPerations' that go beyond financial constructions and combine craftsmanship and creativity from the Low Countries. A jury decides which production will be awarded the title 'Best Co-production'.

Tiger Stripes

The jury rejoiced in the large number of female directors and interesting female lead characters in the competition and ultimately selected "Tiger Stripes" by Amanda Nell Eu as the winner. The film tells the story of 12-year-old Zaffan who lives in a rural Malaysian community and enjoys a carefree childhood with her two heartbroken friends. Until she gets her period for the first time, fails to recognize her own body and feels herself drifting further and further away from her friends, culture and herself. According to the jury, it is "the most quirky film they saw”.

The young actresses are downright amazing, especially the lead actress who delivers a tour de force both emotionally and physically. Despite the film's heavy subject matter, the message comes across powerfully through much-needed humor and absurdity. The ominous atmosphere is masterfully emphasized by the music, sound design, styling and locations. The collaboration of these various disciplines takes the film to the next level. Although the setting seems like another world, the universal theme still makes the film relatable.

Jury

Claire van Daal

Juryvoorzitter en goede collega Claire van Daal maakt al zo’n elf jaar de programmatie van het Nederlands Film Festival. Elk jaar stelt ze een prikkelend festivalprogramma samen uit meer dan vijfhonderd inzendingen. Het beoordelen van films is voor haar dus geen onbekend terrein.

Annelore Crollet

Annelore Crollet is actrice en bekend van theater, tv en film. Ze speelde enkele gastrollen in onder meer ‘Callboys’, ‘Gent West’ en ‘Familie’. Momenteel schittert ze in de film ‘Wil’ die ook te zien is tijdens het festival en kans maakt op een Ensor.

Violet Braeckman

Violet Braeckman maakte furore met haar rollen in de series ‘Over water’, ‘GR5’, ‘F*ck you Very, Very Much’ en ‘Assisen’. Die laatste zal dit jaar worden vertoond tijdens het filmfestival (p. 20).

Isis Mihrimah Cabolet

De Nederlandse Isis Mihrimah Cabolet ken je waarschijnlijk van haar rollen in de serie ‘Keizersvrouwen’ en de film ‘App’. In 2022 maakte Cabolet haar debuut als regisseur met de kortfilm ‘F*ck My Life’.

Raf Roosens

Raf Roosens is naast filmregisseur van onder andere de kortfilms ‘Rotkop’ en ‘White Goldfish’ mede-eigenaar van het Belgische productiebedrijf Rococo. Hij werkt momenteel samen met zijn broer Jan aan de langspeelfilm ‘Come Back’ waarin Veerle Baetens en Zwangere Guy de hoofdrollen vertolken.
