During the festival there are several competitions in which an (inter)national jury decides who wins. These awards include the LOOK and, COOP!, but also the Student Pitch for upcoming talent.
The international LOOK! competition is unique in Europe and focuses on the esthetics of the production: the performance of the D.O.P. (Director of Photography) and the Production Design team (art direction, costumes, make-up & visual effects). In this competition you will see visual masterpieces: films you have to see on the big screen!
All selected films compete for 'Best Film' honours (which earns thel a national marketing materials in addition to a 10k cash prize). Additional prizes are given for 'Best D.O.P'. & 'Best Production Design'. All prizes are allocated by an international jury.
The international COOP competition is a brand new competition (first edition in 2022) and focuses exclusively on Flemish co-productions and Dutch co-productions. Inspired by the "think globally, act locally" ideology, the FFO programmers look for remarkable and exciting film productions that take international collaborations to a new level. We want to motivate Flemish and Dutch producers to look for alternative collaborations to make a project succeed.
A Belgian/Dutch jury of film programmers will decide on the 'Best Coproduction' (Money prize of 5k and marketing package). There are also recognitions for 'Best Screenplay' & 'Best Directing'.
Short Film competition
Many young talents take their first steps in the film world through a short film. The Ostend Film Festival also wants to present these fresh, surprising and aesthetic productions to the general public and has been holding a competition for short films since 2018.
The Student Pitch
FFO wants to support young creatives. Making a film is a costly thing and a huge threshold for some. We make it our mission to help students realize their project/dream. Senior FiIm students who are attending a Flemish film school can apply for the Student pitch. 20 students are selected and invited to pitch their project to a professional jury. Based on previous work, creativity and potential, 10 students will be awarded. There are substantial cash prizes, coupons for AV equipment & post production services.
