Every year the Ostend Film Festival (FFO) reveals the winners of its various international competitions (LOOK!, COOP!, and SOON!). This week, ‘Black Dog’ by Guan Hu, ‘Alpha’ by Jan-Willem van Ewijk, and ‘Loveable’ by Lilja Ingolfsdotti were named the big winners of FFO25 by the various juries.
Never before has the festival reached so many film enthusiasts as in 2025. With a sold-out family day and a record number of students attending school screenings, young audiences were more engaged than ever. A seat occupancy rate of over 70% across all screenings and the highly successful morning screenings made the 17th edition of FFO a true record-breaking event.
The jury, led by director Wouter Bouvijn, was unanimous in its decision to crown 'Black Dog' by Chinese director Guan Hu as the winner of the LOOK! competition. After winning the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival last year, the film now also takes home the top prize in Ostend.
'Black Dog' tells the story of a man who returns to his hometown on the edge of the Gobi Desert after serving a ten-year prison sentence. Everything has changed: the residents have been displaced from their home and stray dogs roam the area. Against his will, the ex-convict is tasked with tracking down a potentially dangerous dog. When man and dog come face to face, they form an unexpected bond.
According to the jury, the film stands out due to its exceptional cinematic vision and a gripping storytelling that creates a fascinating rhythm.
Subtly, 'Black Dog' explores themes of loneliness, masculinity, and humility towards humans, animals, and the environment. This is done without pretension, leaving room for visual humor and a deep respect for the power of imagery and sound. Moreover, the setting and background play just as significant a role as the foreground action.
The LOOK! competition highlights visually stunning films that must be seen on the big screen. According to the jury, the modern myth of 'Black Dog' establishes an impressive world from the very beginning.
What initially might seem like a challenging film unfolds into a cinematic experience that is both thought-provoking and accessible. Each frame resembles a carefully composed painting.
‘Black Dog’ is distributed by Cinéart and will be released on the 23rd of April. The award within the COOP! competition is accompanied by a cash prize of 10.000 euros for the distributor.
The Belgian Society of Cinematographers (SBC) is a proud partner of the LOOK!-competition.
The jury, chaired by Cindy Godefroi (artistic director of Theater aan Zee), named ‘Alpha’ by Dutch director Jan-Willem van Ewijk as Best Film in the COOP! competition. This authentic and vulnerable mountain drama follows a father and son over the snow-covered peaks of the Alps. Together, they grieve the loss of their wife and mother. During their journey, they not only clash with each other's difficult personalities but also with the treacherous landscape of the inhospitable mountains. This international film was made possible through an intensive collaboration between the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Slovenia.
‘Alpha’, according to the jury, perfectly embodies the FFO25 theme SUPER NATURAL. Beyond its breathtaking nature shots, there is much happening beneath the surface.
The film intensely portrays a father-son relationship that can be deeply confronting and painfully recognizable. The protagonists are two alpha males that constantly try to outdo each other. They push themselves to the limit in their unspoken love for one another, accompanied by a lot of frustration.
With this award, the jury members also want to highlight director Jan-Willem van Ewijk.
He pushes the boundaries in every aspect of this film, delivering a visually striking piece where the mountains not only serve as a backdrop but as a full-fledged character. Through clever cinematography, an additional layer of symbolism is added to the story. The static panoramic shots transform into stunning, detailed portraits.
In conclusion, the jury expressed how they were drawn into the emotions of the characters during the screening.
Against the backdrop of an overwhelming natural landscape, the insignificance of the two men becomes intensely palpable. ‘Alpha’ is a film that undoubtedly leaves the audience both amazed and moved.
The film ‘Alpha’ is distributed by September Film and will be released in theaters later this year. The award within the COOP! competition is accompanied by a cash prize of 7,500 euros for the distributor.
The entire SOON! competition jury, chaired by actress Emilie De Roo, was deeply moved by ‘Loveable,’ the feature debut of Finnish director Lilja Ingolfsdottir. The film paints an intimate portrait of a woman’s relationship with her husband, her mother, her children, and—most importantly—herself.
Director-screenwriter Lilja Ingolfsdottir proves herself a master of micro-storytelling. She zooms in so closely on the inner lives of her characters that it occasionally becomes uncomfortable for the viewer. Her sharp observations leave no detail overlooked. Despite—or perhaps thanks to—this very specific style of storytelling, it is easy for the audience to connect with the narrative.
The honesty and purity of the screenplay are reflected in both the cinematography and the acting. The jury emphasizes its admiration for actress Helga Guren, who portrays the introspection and struggles of the main character Maria without embellishment.
For us, this film is more than just a story about a divorce. It is a relatable depiction of the many parents struggling to balance a career and family life. ‘Loveable’ is a film that cuts deep and stings, but also offers comfort.
The SOON! competition highlights emerging directors at the beginning of their filmmaking careers. ‘Loveable’ wins Best Film. The title is distributed by September Film and will be released later this year. The distributor receives a cash prize of 5000 euros.
The jury also wishes to give a special mention to ‘Winter in Sokcho’ by French-Japanese director Koya Kamura.
This poetic debut film brings a South Korean fishing village to life through refined cinematography. The film stands out visually due to its organic interplay with subtle black-and-white animations that illustrate the protagonist’s inner world and add depth to the story.
The screenplay of ‘Winter in Sokcho’ is based on the eponymous novel by Elisa Shua and explores themes of bicultural identity, longing, and self-acceptance. The protagonist, a receptionist at a guesthouse, sees her quiet life turned upside down by the arrival of a French guest seeking an authentic Korean experience. Through the eyes of an outsider, she discovers a new side of her country—and herself.
We are impressed by the restrained performance of debut actress Bella-Kim, who conveys the protagonist Soo-Ha’s complexity with natural sensitivity. Thanks to subtle humor and warm supporting characters, this grandly executed story never feels pretentious but rather self-aware. We eagerly anticipate more work from Koya Kamura.
‘Winter in Sokcho’ is distributed by Paradiso Films and will be released on the 26th of February.
In addition to winning Best Film in the LOOK! competition, 'Black Dog' by Guan Hu has also been named the winner of the UFK-UCC Press Jury Prize.
Guan Hu's 'Black Dog' is a masterpiece of understated beauty and emotional depth. With breathtaking visuals of vast and desolate rural China and a powerful theme of loyalty and survival, this nostalgic yet powerful film completely captivates the viewer. It is a poignant, unforgettable, and melancholic portrait of humanity, seen through the eyes of a loyal four-legged companion. 'Black Dog' is a must-see for fans of subtle, poetic Chinese cinema.
